Submissions are now open for the federal court’s newest juried public art installation, American Independence: From 1776 to 2026.

Overview
To celebrate the 250th anniversary of the nation’s founding, the United States District Court for the District of Minnesota invites artists to submit pieces commemorating the semiquincentennial. Pieces should be inspired by the people, places, history, and ideals that have shaped our nation, recognizing the diversity, complexity, and evolving story of the American experience – from its founding to the present day. Pieces are encouraged to be thought provoking and civic-minded; explicit content will not be accepted.

Artists may submit up to three (3) pieces of any medium that is self-supporting on a court-provided easel. Paintings, canvases, photographs, posters, textiles etc. should be framed for display, with a weight limit of 15 lbs. Pieces may be listed for sale, with the court taking no commission, but must remain up for the entirety of the exhibit.

Selected works will be featured in an exhibition in the lobby of the Diana E. Murphy U.S. Courthouse in Minneapolis from June 22 to October 23, 2026. The court will host an opening reception in the evening the week of June 22, exact date TBD.

Eligibility
Artists must be 18 years of age and currently reside in Minnesota.
